Columbia, SC – January 12, 2026 – January is recognized nationwide as Substance Use Disorder Treatment Month (Treatment Month), an observance led by the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to raise awareness about treatment options and encourage people to seek help without fear or stigma. The South Carolina Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities’ Office of Substance Use Services (OSUS) is using this month to highlight the importance of treatment, recovery support and community understanding for individuals and families affected by substance use disorders.

“Substance use disorder treatment saves lives and strengthens families,” said Sara Goldsby, director of OSUS. “Treatment Month reminds us that recovery looks different for everyone and that help is available at every stage of the journey.”

Treatment Month focuses on supporting individuals who are considering treatment, those currently in treatment or recovery, healthcare providers and the families and loved ones who play a critical role in recovery. The observance also highlights the importance of medications for substance use disorders, counseling and wraparound services that address mental health, housing, employment and overall wellness.

National data shows that millions of Americans experience substance use disorders each year, yet many do not receive the treatment they need. Barriers such as stigma, lack of awareness and fear of judgment often prevent people from seeking care.

“Substance Use Disorder Treatment Month is about hope,” Goldsby said. “It is about reminding people that they are not alone and that treatment and recovery are within reach.”

OSUS encourages families, friends and community members to take part in the monthlong observance by learning more about treatment options, supporting loved ones without judgment and sharing accurate information that helps reduce stigma. Healthcare providers are also encouraged to continue using best practices such as screening, early intervention and evidence-based treatment to support individuals with substance use disorders.
